The knights of malta & the knights templars. People often are confused by these two masonic knighthoods. They are certainly connected, but are not hte same knighthood. To clear up a little confusion, here is a simple and most basic clarification. Within the york rite of freemasonry there is what is known as chivalric masonry. This consists of three ranks, the illustrious ordre of the red cross, the order of malta (knights of malta), and the order of the temple (knights templar. ) known sa appendent degrees or side degrees, these are highly significant. When for example, we see a knight templar wearing a white malta cross jewel, this signifies his membership in the knights of malta which is his last rank before attaining the status of knight templar. This is an exceptionally fine circa 1880's-1890's ornate silver knight templars york rite malta degree sword from a commandery absed in san francisco, california. This si a genuine historic sword made by the m. C. Lilley & co, one of the greatest of all historic american makers of military and fraternal swords and regalia. The work of m. C. Lillye often surpasses that of others. Lilley, like the ames sword company, the pettibone brothers, and william horstmann of philadelphia are among the most important manufacturers of fraternal, masonic and military items in history. This is one of their best malta swords. Amidst the intricate gold enhanced symbolic designs beautifully etched and engraved on the blade is identification of the lnadmark west coast golden gate commandery. On the reverse there is the name of the original owner.

The blade shines bright like a mirror. It si also of the wider sized variety.

The entire sword glows like magic. The designs of the mounts include a crusader's tent over a dynamic malta cross of the original knights hospitaler which adorns the ancient beausant, battle flag of the historic templar armies. Thne there is ancient motto in hoc signo vinces with this sign shalt thou conquer. The middle mount features the intertwined initials km for knights malta. The bottom drag is an ancient chivalric crest featuring a maltese cross and a knight in profile.

The pommel is a helmeted medieval knights portrait bust. The black woodne grip features a silver cross centerpiece. In the center of the hand-guard is the pronounced temlpar cross through crown. Swords from the order of malta (the templar degree) are quite scarce when compared to most commandery swords.

As the masonic knights of malta constitute a very, very elemental component of knights templarims within the york rite, so did their ancient philosophical namesakes, the original historical knights of malta (the hospitallers/order of the hospital) hold a pivotal position with regards to the medieval templars. While there are non-masonic groups (mostly catholic) that also use the moniker of knights of malta, our beautiful old sword indeed hails from the york rite within freemasonry and its relevance ot freemasonry should not be underestimated.
